As part of my personal development class, we were asked to make a project on a goal we wanted to complete. I chose to make my project on “Getting My Drives License” as that is a goal I wish to complete in the next eight years.

The Driving Test

In order to receive your driving license you must pass both your theory and actual driving test.

The Theory Test

  • You must be at least 15 years old to take the driver theory test.
  • The test consists of 40 questions and you have to answer 35 questions correctly in order to be successful.
  • You have 45 minutes to complete the test.
  • The test is designed to check knowledge of topics such as:
  1. Rules of the Road
  2. Risk perception
  3. Eco-driving
  4. Hazard awareness
  5. Good driving behaviour

Essential Driver Trainer (EDT)

  • In order to take your driving test you must undergo some Essential Driver Training. This training course consists of education on the fundamental driving skills of new drivers. EDT is mandatory to all learners who received their first permit on or after 4 April 2011.
  • EDT is part of the RSA’s Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) scheme and intended to improve road safety. EDT is only part of the learning process, you need lots of practice and may need more lessons to become a safe driver.

Where To Take The Test

  • The town of Clifden has the highest rate of success in driving tests within Ireland as they have a pass rate of 68.97%.
  • The towns of Sligo and Carrick-on-Shannon following close behind with a  pass rate within the 68th percentile.
  • The towns of Rathgar, Naas and Carlow have the lowest rate of succession with a pass rate below 45%.
  • Donegal has a pass rate just above the national average of 53.5% as they have a pass rate of 61.4%.

   Fun Facts

  • The oldest person to pass their drivers test was  the late Lord Renton, who passed his drivers test at 95 years of age.
  • The person who has failed their test most is a South Korean woman, she has attempted to her earn a license  771 times. At 68 years old she continues to try, even though  she is yet to pass.
  • Less than 54% of men have to take a second test, meaning more than 60% pass first time.
  • 56% of women do not pass their test first time and have to take it at least a second time.

Thank You

This project was a great learning experience and I know what I have to do in order to get my license now!
